Artists use a large sculpture to protest against OpenAI in San Francisco
On Tuesday, two artists from the Berkeley-based Odd Friend Studio debuted a large-scale installation titled "What Iceberg?" at the entrance of an OpenAI developer gathering in San Francisco. The five-foot-tall sculpture, constructed from cardboard, paint, and papier mâché, serves as a symbolic critique of the company. According to the creators, the piece depicts OpenAI executives and financial backers fleeing a descending vessel with massive riches, leaving the general public to deal with the consequences of artificial intelligence.
This creative demonstration highlights growing social tensions regarding the economic distribution of AI advancements. For the technology sector, such public displays underscore the importance of addressing the societal impacts of automation. While this specific event is an artistic protest, it reflects a broader climate of scrutiny that developers and companies must navigate as they deploy new technologies.
