arXiv limits how many papers researchers can upload each month to fight AI spam
The preprint repository arXiv has implemented strict new restrictions on how frequently users can upload research papers. Effective immediately, individual contributors are restricted to a maximum of two new submissions per calendar month. Additionally, the platform has established a cap of three active submissions per person at any single time. An active submission is defined as any paper currently undergoing the review or consideration process but not yet officially published.
This policy shift follows a significant rise in low-quality content, largely attributed to the increased use of AI-assisted tools. Previously, the organization relied on flexible moderation to manage volume, but the surge in automated or low-effort submissions necessitated these rigid quantitative boundaries. While large research institutions with numerous staff members may experience minimal disruption, individual researchers must now carefully manage their publication timelines to comply with these new monthly quotas.
