Cloudflare launches open Clef models to compete with Jev
On Thursday, Cloudflare introduced its new Clef decision model family to compete directly with TypeSafe's Jev. This release includes two distinct versions: the standard Clef and a more compact, rapid iteration known as Clef-flash. Both models are designed to handle structured queries involving rankings, multiple-choice selections, and binary yes/no responses. Unlike its predecessor, the Clef series utilizes an open-weight architecture built upon frozen Qwen3.8-27B and Qwen3.5-9B backbones, allowing for local deployment.
By utilizing a prefill-only pass during inference, Cloudflare aims to provide superior speed and intelligence compared to existing market alternatives. This shift toward open-weight, locally runnable models offers developers more flexibility in how they integrate decision-making AI into their existing infrastructure. However, businesses should carefully evaluate these new tools to ensure compatibility with current systems and to determine if adopting this architecture introduces additional maintenance requirements or potential security vulnerabilities.
