Companies are adopting a new type of engineer to help implement AI
During the VMware September Explore conference, industry experts discussed the rising popularity of the "forward-deployed engineer" (FDE) role. Ryan Sheehan, a senior vice president at the $16 billion solutions integrator SHI, noted that while the term is currently trending, the practice of sending specialized consultants to client sites to execute specific missions is not a new concept. The designation originated at Palantir and has recently been adopted by various service providers to describe staff tasked with developing artificial intelligence proofs of concept.
This shift in professional terminology reflects a broader trend in how companies deploy technical talent to manage emerging technologies. As businesses increasingly rely on these specialized engineers to implement complex systems, they must exercise caution regarding AI integration. Organizations should rigorously evaluate the actual capabilities, data sources, and security protocols of any new technology before deployment. Furthermore, the adoption of these new engineering models may influence future regulatory and compliance obligations, requiring companies to consult primary guidance before taking action.
