Drone strike disables major Russian cloud data center
A drone strike targeting a facility in Sasovo, located approximately 300 kilometers southeast of Moscow, has disabled a major Yandex Cloud availability zone. The company confirmed that the attack triggered a fire, resulting in a total cessation of operations at the ru-central1-b data center. While the Russian tech giant has not officially identified the attackers, Ukrainian reports suggest a retaliatory strike following previous damage to Ukrainian digital infrastructure. Yandex currently cannot guarantee when services will return to normal and has suggested that clients utilize alternative options, such as bare metal servers, to maintain continuity.
This incident highlights significant vulnerabilities in physical hardware infrastructure during geopolitical conflicts. For businesses relying on cloud-based ecosystems, the sudden loss of a primary availability zone underscores the necessity of robust disaster recovery protocols. Organizations must prioritize multi-region redundancy and evaluate the reliability of their service providers to mitigate the financial and operational risks associated with sudden, localized hardware failures.
