Engineer goes to prison after trying to extort industrial company with cyber attack
A former core infrastructure engineer has been sentenced to prison following an attempted cyber extortion scheme targeting an industrial company. According to reports from SecurityWeek, the individual compromised the organization's systems by deleting administrative accounts and resetting hundreds of user passwords. To prevent the destruction of company servers, the perpetrator demanded a ransom of 20 bitcoin.
This incident highlights the significant internal risks posed by privileged users with deep technical access. Such breaches demonstrate that traditional perimeter defenses are insufficient against malicious insiders. Consequently, enterprises may find it necessary to overhaul their internal protocols, particularly regarding how they manage administrative credentials, handle sensitive financial documentation, and report tax-related data to mitigate the impact of such high-level sabotage.
