Epic Games builds a faster launcher using AI to speed up development
Epic Games has released a preview version of its updated PC games launcher, utilizing a development method the company describes as "vibe coded." This new iteration aims to outperform Valve's Steam by offering increased speed and improved responsiveness through a redesigned interface. According to General Manager Martin Keely, the development team rebuilt the software from the ground up using a different technology stack. By employing artificial intelligence to assist in writing and reviewing various features, a small group of developers was able to accelerate the process of rewriting the codebase for Windows, Mac, and Linux systems.
This shift highlights a broader strategic move toward AI-assisted software creation. CEO Tim Sweeney previously indicated that the organization is undergoing a significant transition to prioritize AI acceleration across its operations. For the broader tech industry, this development serves as a reminder that enterprises must rigorously evaluate the actual capabilities, data sources, and safety protocols of AI tools before integrating them into professional workflows.
