Fake Google security job ads used to recruit voice phishing scammers
A recent investigation by the Trellix Advanced Research Center revealed a fraudulent recruitment effort on Telegram involving a fake Google Security Team. In an advertisement posted in August within a UK-based fraud channel, a user known as Derian sought male and female callers to conduct voice-phishing scams targeting individuals in the United States and Canada. Despite explicitly instructing applicants that script reading was prohibited, the recruitment post included the precise dialogue callers were expected to use when impersonating Google representatives.
This incident highlights the evolving tactics used by cybercriminals to organize large-scale social engineering operations. While the contradictory nature of the advertisement is notable, the underlying activity poses a genuine threat to consumer security. For the corporate sector, such developments underscore the necessity of auditing business software and data transfer protocols. Organizations may need to implement more secure connections or software updates to mitigate the risks posed by sophisticated phishing campaigns.
