Fake job interviews and AI tools led to massive Binance theft
Binance recently disclosed that a sophisticated, multi-stage campaign resulted in a record-breaking $6.3 billion theft. According to an incident report released on Tuesday, the breach occurred on October 29 following several months of targeted activity. The attack involved compromising the computers of three engineers through various methods, including social engineering via fraudulent job interviews and the use of a tampered installer. The FBI has linked the operation to TraderTraitor, a North Korean hacking group associated with the Lazarus Group.
The heist utilized a combination of techniques such as endpoint takeover, compromised internal AI tooling, and an "advanced transaction-authorization method." This event highlights how attackers can exploit professional recruitment processes to infect corporate devices with malware. To mitigate similar risks, businesses should quickly check whether they are affected, install fixes and protect important systems and data.
