Google backed company starts geothermal power production in Utah
Fervo Energy, a firm supported by Google's Chocolate Factory, has successfully generated initial electricity at its Cape Station facility located in Beaver County, Utah. This milestone marks the activation of a 33 MW GeoBlock, which is scheduled to begin full commercial operations within the coming week. The company intends to add an additional 66 MW of capacity by the start of next year, targeting a long-term potential of over 4 GW at this site. Currently, the provider is focused on meeting 900 MW of existing power contracts.
This development utilizes enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) that adapt drilling and fracturing techniques from the oil and gas sector to harness subterranean heat. By creating pathways for water to circulate through deep rock formations, the plant converts thermal energy into grid-ready electricity. This advancement demonstrates the growing viability of scalable geothermal technology as a consistent renewable energy source, potentially offering a more stable alternative to weather-dependent power generation for large-scale industrial and commercial users.
