Google Cloud turns Gemini into an autonomous AI agent for businesses
During the Gemini at Work 2026 event, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian announced that Gemini is evolving into a universal agent designed for professional environments. This agentic AI can autonomously plan and execute complex tasks by utilizing various tools, connecting to existing corporate systems, and delegating responsibilities to specialized subagents. To facilitate seamless integration, the technology can even be assigned its own workplace identity, including a dedicated email address.
This shift toward agentic capabilities allows the platform to operate directly within established developer environments, inboxes, and document suites. By selecting the most appropriate model for specific assignments and incorporating internal cost management, the system aims to streamline workflows like coding and content generation. However, organizations must carefully evaluate the practical capabilities, data utilization policies, and security protocols of these autonomous agents before full-scale implementation to ensure operational safety.
