Google partners with Constellation Energy to boost nuclear power supply
Google entered into a 20-year power purchase agreement with Constellation Energy on Tuesday to secure 3,590 megawatts of electricity. This arrangement includes nearly 890 megawatts of new nuclear capacity generated through strategic upgrades to at least 11 existing facilities located in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. To fulfill these obligations, Constellation Energy intends to invest $4.3 billion into modernizing turbines, digital control systems, and steam generators, with the initial uprated reactor expected to be operational by 2028.
This partnership aims to satisfy the massive electricity requirements of Google's expanding data center infrastructure. By utilizing the uprating process to increase output from current reactors, the companies can bypass the lengthy timelines and grid connection difficulties typically associated with building entirely new power plants. This strategy allows for a more rapid increase in energy availability to support large-scale technological growth.
