Huawei AI chips now outsell Nvidia in China
During a recent Q&A session, Huawei rotating chairman Eric Xu announced that the company's Ascend neural processing units (NPUs) have captured a larger share of the Chinese AI chip market than Nvidia. While Xu noted that precise market data for Nvidia remains difficult to obtain, internal metrics suggest that Huawei's homegrown hardware has successfully overtaken its American rival within the region.
This shift occurs despite evolving US export control policies. Although the Trump administration previously implemented strict licensing requirements for high-end accelerators from Nvidia and AMD, recent regulatory adjustments have allowed for more flexible sales of certain powerful components to approved Chinese clients. Nevertheless, Huawei's rise highlights a growing trend of domestic technological self-reliance in response to international trade restrictions and the desire to secure independent access to critical computing infrastructure.
