ICANN receives many applications for new website domain names
ICANN recently announced that it has received 1,615 applications for new generic top-level domains (GTLDs). This marks only the second time the governing body has opened such a process since its 2012 policy shift. Notable applicants include OpenAI, which has requested 15 different strings, including .chatgpt and .agi. Additionally, Google is competing in an eight-way race to secure the .api domain through its Charleston Road Registry subsidiary.
The successful implementation of these new domain extensions could force companies to update their internal systems for tax reporting, invoicing, and general communications. Because the official documentation specifically references Africa, organizations within that region should verify local availability and specific regulatory requirements. Businesses must carefully monitor these developments to ensure their digital infrastructure and compliance protocols remain aligned with any emerging domain standards.
