Microsoft changes how Copilot works with Office apps
Microsoft is restructuring how its Copilot AI integrates with its productivity suite. The company plans to embed Office functionality directly into the Copilot application, allowing users to generate documents through prompts and subsequently refine them within specific programs like Word. This workflow enables continuous interaction with the AI while editing. Simultaneously, Microsoft is removing certain AI capabilities from Outlook, such as the previously announced dynamic theming feature. These updates are currently being deployed to Frontier customers within the Chat and Cowork environments.
This shift represents a significant change in how users interact with AI-driven document creation and collaboration. By moving the primary interface to the Copilot app, the company is prioritizing a prompt-based workflow, though the reliance on OneDrive instead of SharePoint may present challenges for enterprise-level file management. For businesses, these adjustments could necessitate changes to internal processes for generating, sharing, or reporting essential documents and financial records. Furthermore, the removal of existing features highlights the potential for rapid shifts in software availability as the company reallocates its technological focus.
