Microsoft introduces new lifecycle stages for Azure virtual machines
Microsoft recently introduced an enhanced lifecycle framework for Azure virtual machine instances. According to a late September announcement from the Redmond-based company, cloud instances will now progress through four distinct stages: Current, Extended, End of Life, and Retired. While the update clarifies these phases, Microsoft has not provided specific timelines regarding when particular instance types might transition between these stages.
Under this new structure, "Current" machines remain the standard for new deployments, whereas "Extended" and "End of Life" versions may face restricted availability or modified pricing structures. Once an instance reaches the "Retired" status, it becomes unsupported and deallocated, meaning it remains dormant with preserved data but cannot be provisioned. This shift requires technical teams to carefully evaluate their cloud infrastructure to manage costs, ensure service reliability, and maintain security. Furthermore, businesses should review their regulatory and compliance obligations to ensure that workload migrations align with necessary legal standards.
