New platform uses farm data to help African farmers get credit
UfarmX has facilitated more than $6.8 million in trade by converting agricultural data into creditworthiness metrics for banks and retailers. Founded by Alexander Zanders following a shift from industrial processing to farming in Oyo State, the platform now supports over 10,000 farmers across Nigeria, Senegal, and Liberia. The company's model utilizes rural production data to generate financial signals, helping smallholders access essential inputs through credit rather than traditional direct lending.
This data-driven approach addresses significant financing gaps in the agricultural sector by providing commercial lenders with reliable risk assessments. For enterprises operating within Africa, the expansion of such credit engines suggests a growing opportunity to integrate rural producers into formal value chains. However, companies should conduct due diligence regarding local service availability, regional pricing structures, and specific regulatory requirements in each market.
