New startup uses AI to scan faces and create acne prescriptions
Nolla Health, a healthcare startup, launched a pilot program in Utah on Monday that utilizes artificial intelligence to facilitate acne treatments. Through a dedicated mobile application, patients can scan their faces to allow an AI system to evaluate the intensity of their breakouts and automatically generate prescriptions. During the initial phase involving the first 100 users, two doctors will personally authorize every AI-produced prescription. As the program expands to 500 patients, the requirement for immediate physician approval will shift, eventually moving to a model where medical professionals review a minimum 10% sample of the automated orders.
This development represents a significant shift in dermatological care by integrating autonomous technology into the clinical workflow. By gradually reducing direct human oversight in exchange for algorithmic analysis, the company is testing a scalable method for remote skin diagnostics. This approach could potentially streamline how medical services are delivered and managed, though it necessitates careful monitoring to ensure patient safety as the level of physician intervention decreases.
