Nigerian founders build travel payment tool to solve cross border issues
Oluwatomi Ayorinde and Chizaram Ucheaga, the founders of the fintech startup Timon, have developed a $47 million multi-currency travel card solution designed to resolve cross-border payment difficulties. After experiencing significant friction with international banking and cash management while using Nigerian passports, the duo relocated to Nairobi to scale their platform. The service has successfully reached more than 100,000 users throughout 16 different African markets. Despite receiving backing from the US-based crypto accelerator Alliance, the founders encountered significant logistical obstacles when visa restrictions prevented both partners from traveling to California for business.
This development highlights the persistent tension between rapid digital financial scaling and the physical limitations of international mobility for African entrepreneurs. While Timon has successfully engineered a sophisticated travel technology stack, the inability to easily navigate visa processes remains a critical bottleneck for global expansion. Companies operating within these markets should carefully evaluate local availability, service pricing, and specific regional compliance requirements. Furthermore, the intersection of fintech growth and international travel regulations suggests that businesses must remain vigilant regarding evolving regulatory obligations when managing cross-border operations.
