Teenager finds major security flaw in Microsoft cloud platform
A 16-year-old security researcher known as Faav discovered a critical authentication vulnerability within Microsoft's Titan analytics platform. By utilizing an AI-driven tool he developed called Antares, the researcher bypassed security protocols via an Azure Cloud Services host. This flaw allowed him to execute unauthorized SQL queries without valid credentials, granting administrative control over databases containing approximately 17.3 trillion rows of data. Microsoft has since secured the API and provided a $5,000 bounty to the researcher for his findings.
This incident highlights significant risks regarding how cloud-hosted services validate login tokens. Because the Titan service failed to verify signatures on authentication tokens, internal data intended only for Microsoft employees was potentially exposed. Such vulnerabilities underscore the vital importance of data integrity, as business leaders rely on accurate and secure information to make informed strategic decisions.
