Tesla electric cars can now power your home during outages
Tesla is broadening the availability of its Powershare Home Backup functionality, allowing owners of certain Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles to utilize their car batteries for residential energy during outages. While this capability was initially restricted to the Cybertruck, it now extends to these popular sedan and SUV models. Currently, the feature necessitates the use of a Powerwall 3 system, though the company indicated that compatibility with Powerwall 2 and Powerwall Plus units is expected in the near future.
This expansion places Tesla in direct competition with other manufacturers, such as GM and Kia, that already provide vehicle-to-home energy solutions. By leveraging existing vehicle hardware to provide more than two days of supplemental electricity, Tesla is enhancing the utility of its ecosystem. This development offers consumers a more versatile way to manage energy resilience without relying solely on dedicated stationary storage units.
