Two major government hacks leak sensitive personal data
The Pentagon recently disclosed that a prolonged security compromise involving the Defense Manpower Data Center resulted in the theft of personal records belonging to approximately 2.8 million living individuals. This breach, which began last October, targeted a network used to aggregate Department of Defense personnel information. According to documentation shared on Reddit, the stolen data includes names, addresses, sex, race, Social Security numbers, and specific occupational specialties of over 2 million active and former military members.
This incident marks the second major government network intrusion in a single month, following a recent ransomware claim involving FBI systems. The exposure of occupational data is particularly concerning as it may allow foreign intelligence services to pinpoint high-value military targets. To mitigate similar risks, commercial enterprises must immediately audit their own security postures, apply necessary software patches, and strengthen protections for critical data assets to prevent exploitation by criminal or state-sponsored actors.
