Windows 11 will now back up your settings by default
Microsoft has transitioned Windows settings backup to a default setting within the Windows 11 26H2 release. This update, delivered via an enablement package, automatically activates the service to preserve device configurations and Microsoft Store application lists. While the version shares a codebase with the previous 25H2 release, the primary shift involves the backend activation of this backup and restore functionality, which was formerly disabled by default for most users.
This change significantly impacts system administrators who may now need to manually disable the feature to maintain existing security or data protocols. By making this service the standard, Microsoft aims to facilitate a cloud-first strategy for managing user settings and hardware transitions. However, the move could create challenges for organizations that have strict internal policies prohibiting automatic cloud synchronization or specific types of data backups.
