You can now run Apple's abandoned Copland operating system in a web browser
Three decades after Apple cancelled its ambitious project to modernize the Mac operating system, a new web-based emulator allows users to run the abandoned software directly in a browser. Developer Michael Steil, operating under the name Mist, utilized an experimental version of the DingusPPC Power Mac emulator to achieve this. The tool enables the execution of the D11E4 build, which was the final developer release from June 1996. To make this work, Steil applied eleven specific patches created with the help of artificial intelligence to the emulator's code.
This technical achievement provides a rare window into a failed era of computing history, specifically regarding Apple's attempt to implement microkernel architecture and preemptive multitasking. Because the upstream emulator project prohibits the use of AI-generated code, these specific patches cannot be merged into the main software repository without being manually rewritten. While the experience remains unstable due to the unfinished nature of the original software, it demonstrates how modern tools can resurrect legacy technologies for historical preservation and research.
